Laurie & Nick Tie the Knot!

That beautiful bride is my cousin, Laurie. She and Nick tied the knot last weekend in Toledo, OH in front of an audience of family and friends. (I omitted last names to prevent random people from finding this site via Google). I had a great time hanging out and catching up with my Warner family.

I also took this shaky video on my digital camera of my Uncle Don giving Laurie away. (best viewed over high-speed)

Eating Out: Ordering Vegan

I have had the pleasure of eating out lately and I have been pleasantly surprised by the vegan/vegetarian options available on local menus. It is so nice to have more than one option and/or entrees that you don’t have to caveat with multiple exceptions.

Clyde’s at Willow Creek Farm:

This was called the “Bowl of Spring”. Potato gnocchi served with asaparagus, fava beans and carrots. Delicious.

Busboys and Poets:

Last night I had yummy vegan pizza with a great pinot. I am such a huge fan of this place for many reasons. I must enumerate below:
- LOTS of vegan/vegetarian options
- cool bar/ambience
- great wines/cocktails!
- carrot juice
- outdoor seating
- restaurant with a mission: community

Summer TV - Monday Night Documentaries

HBO has a special summer program called the HBO Documentary Films Series where they premiere a documentary every Monday night. I watched Resolved on Monday night and was totally impressed. It covered modern debating, changes in debating practices, diverse opinions about what debating should be. The real compelling aspect of the film was the comparison of two debate teams; a team of 2 black debaters challenging the major principles of modern debate, and the other team of 2 upper class white kids in Texas. The topic sounds boring but it was totally intriguing.

Favorite factoid of the film - learning about Paulo Freire and the “banking” concept.

I wish I had debated in high school - I wish I were a debate nerd!

Not Chicken Silly! Korean BBQ Portobellos

I love summer. Even the days that I have to work. I try to enjoy the extra hours of light in the evening. So when I’m picking summer weeknight meals - I’m looking for easy and quick. This recipe for Korean BBQ Marinade is a perfect one. I saw this in the June 1, 2008 issue of Vegetarian Times. They suggested using it to marinade and grill portobellos. If you read this blog, you know I’m not good at improv, so I followed their suggestions to a T, including tossing with chopped scallions and sesame seeds.

Mission Accomplished! Quick, easy, tasty. I served with steamed spinach with red wine vinegar and grilled hearts of palm (inspired by the catering at my cousin, Justin’s graduation party). I’m sure this marinade would work well on other veggies, chicken or steak, too.

It kinda looks like chicken…

Man Food: Fiery Fish Tacos

The man of the house made these awesome Fiery Fish Tacos with Mango & Avocado Salsa earlier this week. The recipe is out of an old issue of Men’s Health Magazine. The recipe is not posted on their site (bummer), but this similar recipe is posted.

The picture doesn’t do this meal justice. He grilled/blackened the fish on the gas grill with blackening spice. The fish was so so delicious (also served with purple cabbage). Thanks Man!
